Kaar helps oil major in replacing disparate system and build a centralized system to handle their engineering drawing demands, developed using flex and web services

The Client
The client is the world’s largest oil corporation with the largest crude oil reserves and production. The company’s oil operations cover Saudi Arabia including territorial waters in the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea totaling more than 1.5 million sq. km and proven reserves of 259.8 billion barrels of oil. Its revenue stands at an excess of $200 billion, as of April 2008.

The Challenges
The client had an issue in handling four disparate systems which drive engineering drawing management and engineering tag management. The client's major challenge was to integrate four fragmented databases into one master database and provide an unique user interface that presents the user with all the functionalities provided by the existing four systems. The client also faced problems in handling voluminous data and high number of users.

What Kaar Offered
Our consultants evaluated the current system, understood the deficiencies of the existing systems and worked on building a new system. The new consolidated system was completely built on .net platform. Kaar followed a three layered approach. Data, business and interface layers encapsulated the structure of the existing system. The new portal was developed entirely on Adobe Flex3.0 and communicated with the .Net business layer using XML. Advanced standard components like Dynamic Tree navigation, advanced data grids, paging, and customized upload tools enable to present the information to the users in a seamless manner, thereby making sure that the user is not inundated with huge amounts of data. The application is highly user centric, componentized and dynamic, factors which are very effective when handling and presenting large amounts of data to the user. We also provided interconnectivity within and outside the application using web links.

Business Benefits
The client successfully implemented a consolidated system which encompasses all the functionalities of the disparate systems. Some of the significant benefits are listed below:
  • Users could use a unique and feature rich user interface
  • Centralized database
  • Stable and robust system capable of handling very large amounts of data
  • Advanced search features were incorporated in the new system
  • Real-time dynamic tree based navigation to optimize data presentation and visibility
  • User centric design, the application auto loads user components based on the definition of the user’s role.
